We are feeling the festival buzz! It’s been a busy old time at Fringe HQ as we put the festival together and the final programming decisions are made. The quality, depth and passion of the applications we received this year blew us away. It’s clear that artists around the world are responding to these uncertain times with some pretty remarkable proposals. Hats off to all who applied – your creativity and drive is energising and inspiring.
After an exciting, lengthy and considered process, our selection of applications has been chosen to be part of Fringe this September. We probably could have programmed the festival twice over, such was the quality and ambition of the works proposed to us. We made our selections in order to offer Fringe audiences urgency, excitement, relevance, experimentation and adventure and to propel brave and talented artists forward. We received over 400 applications this year to the main festival and Show in a Bag. That’s a massive 53% increase on the 2016 number. 1,414 artists proposed 18,887 minutes of inspiring, weird, wonderful and brilliant work to us.
Of the over 400 artists and companies that applied, 192 were first time Fringe applicants. As a festival that champions emerging artists, we’re delighted to see so many first-time Fringe hopefuls knocking on our door. Of all of the shows that applied, 256 had never been performed in Ireland.
Fringe is a Dublin festival, but our mission is to encourage new approaches to art by both Irish and international makers. We also put Dublin on the international map every September with our city takeover. So we were thrilled to see applications come in from 33 different countries including Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Nigeria, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, USA and Wales! Applicants contacted us from five continents, 21 counties of Ireland and everywhere from Cavan to Cochabamba.
There aren’t enough adjectives to describe just how incredibly high the standard of applications was this year. We challenged artists to cut through, to astonish us. And boy, they did! The competition was fierce.
Big, huge, massive thanks to all of our 2017 applicants. We have a fabulous festival lined up for Fringe goers this September, and it’s all thanks to you. We can’t wait to see you all at the festival!
Kris and Ruth for all at team Fringe.
